New Staff - A New Rule

by Megara

Hello everyone and welcome back to another year at Hogwarts! Year 59 has brought along some new changes, with new staff members being one of them! I reached out to Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor, Ashftslipknot14 (Morgan) and 1st-4th Year Herbology Professor, Alyssa Pan (Alyssa) to see how they have found Professor-ship so far!

Lucy: Alyssa, Morgan, It’s great to see you both again! Thank you both for agreeing to do this, I understand that you’re both very busy!

Alyssa: You’re very welcome, Lucy!

Morgan: That’s alright, Lucy!

Lucy: Right, shall we dive straight in then? How have you adjusted to life as a Professor?

Alyssa: I don't know if I have actually. Hearing students call me Professor is weird but it's equally amazing and it feels great that I managed to come this far since joining mH. Honestly, I'm kind of just going with the flow of things and I'm not sure if I've completely accepted the fact I am a Professor yet.

Morgan: I think I've adjusted pretty well! My biggest concern so far has been running the Azkaban trip successfully, since it's such an iconic trip, but that is now completed and I'd say it went well, so I'm pretty worry-free at the moment! 😄

Lucy: Those reasons both sound perfectly understandable! Now, what made you want to be a Professor?

Alyssa: Potions Professor opening my last year at Hogwarts. I had never really wanted to be a Professor until it opened and after giving it days worth of thought, I decided it would be the perfect chance for me to...spread my wings a bit more. I obviously did not get the position but after that moment it stuck in my head and I knew I wanted to have Professor as one of my jobs during my Alumni years.

Morgan: Personally, classes were what I was specifically looking for in an HP forum environment when I found mH. Classes were the one thing I was really looking forward to (Quidditch took me by surprise and I certainly ran with it 😉), and as such, I have always loved the idea of being a Professor on the site. Once I got more into the groove of the site and knew which subjects were my favourite, it became even more apparent that Professor was my mH dream job. It doesn't hurt that I also plan to teach at the university level in real life, either 😉.

Lucy: How interesting! Now, what made you choose the subject you’re currently teaching as the one you wanted to teach?

Alyssa: When I was a kid I loved plants, however, I knew nothing about caring for them, and soon that love vanished. When I took Herbology in my fourth year, it brought back my long-forgotten love for them. Then I was made CA the next year and not long after I knew it was one of my absolute favourite classes. So when I saw the position was open, I knew I had to apply! I couldn't resist the opportunity to teach others about both magical and non-magical plants!

Morgan: Defence Against the Dark Arts is such a versatile subject and it truly draws a bit from and intertwines with a lot of other subjects. Classes were so much fun for me as a student and teaching a subject as versatile as DADA is amazing. The class was my second favourite as a student, but now that I've settled a bit more into the Professor life, I think the class is definitely my favourite as far as teaching.

Lucy: How intriguing! Now, what would you say your favourite lesson to teach is?

Alyssa: At the moment it's my "Design a Garden" lesson, but I have a feeling that'll change in the next few years. 😄

Morgan: My favourite regular lesson would probably be the Dark Artefacts lesson for 2nd to 4th years. The lesson is pretty tame as far as some of the others go, but I find the material extremely interesting. As for practical lessons my favourite is the trip to Azkaban. But, I have a new practical that will be run for the first time ever this year, the Informal Duelling Practical, so I'm excited to see if that eventually outranks the Azkaban trip on my personal favourites list. Only time will tell. 😉

Lucy: If you see a rising interest in those lessons, you’re welcome. 😉 Finally, if you could choose a different subject to teach, which one would it be and why?

Alyssa: That's a hard question to answer, but probably Divination. Like Herbology, it was one of my favourite classes to take and I think it'd be cool to teach students something that I found to be super fun!

Morgan: Transfiguration, for sure. It was my favourite subject as a student and was my favourite even before I joined mH.

Lucy: Well thank you, to both of you, for your time and I’m sure our lovely readers will have appreciated getting to know you both more! I can’t wait to see what amazing things you bring to your lessons!

New Sortees - New Legacies

Like every year, Year 59 has brought new students along with it and I thought I would see how some of them have been settling in. Don’t worry, there’s no discrimination here, we have one firstie from each house! 😉 And which house am I starting with you ask? Why should I pick just one! I have all of our firsties sitting in front of me! We have KathyP (Katherine) from Slytherin, kitdiamond (Kit) from Hufflepuff, Aephelia (Sarah) from Gryffindor and Reyna Walles (Arya) from Ravenclaw! So, now that everyone is here, let’s get started, shall we? 😉

Lucy: Hello everyone! Welcome and thank you for agreeing to do this interview for me!

Katherine: Hello Lucy, it’s great to be here!

Kit: Hi Lucy, thanks for having me!

Sarah: Hi Lucy, thanks for the invite!

Arya: Heya Lucy, it’s good to be here!

Lucy: So, everyone, first question: How have you found MyH life?

Katherine: For me, mH life has been awesome! There are just so many new things that I can try! When I first started reading Harry Potter novels, I always used to wonder what Hogwarts would be like in real life, and now I got it! The lessons are so fun because they actually have content in them and assignments! I love the way the teachers have come up with them! Quidditch is wonderful! I have played one match against Ravenpuff as Slytherdor is my team and I loved it! The experience of the tryouts and everything was amazing! The activities in the library section are so interesting! And it's not just about my house, other houses have also been so nice to me! The chats on Discord and everything that happens there too is awesome!

Kit: So far, I am absolutely thrilled! This site is by far the best I've seen if you want an authentic Wizarding World experience. Every time I log on, I feel like I am actually in Hogwarts. There are ups and downs, challenges and successes, and it brings me so much joy to be around.

Sarah: At first, it took a while to get used to the "MyH life" 😄, but with help from the amazing community I have learned so much, and I am definitely more comfortable navigating through Hogwarts, London, etc. In my first year so far, I have joined the Slytherdor Quidditch team, and I work at The Three Broomsticks as well as The Quibbler. So, I've settled in quite nicely.

Arya: If you ever tell me to be on a red rose passing its thrones beneath, then that's definitely my mH life! That thrones represent the hard attempt you must give to get around those wonderfully friendly people, get used to the locations of the site and navigate around the forums and do activities, but as you practice and get used to them, you are automatically 'promoted' to that red rose. As a student of that fragrant ted rose, if I say 'that's one of the best things that had ever caught my attention, then I am sure it will sum up everything!

Lucy: That’s great to hear! Speaking of your houses, how are you settling into your respective houses?

Katherine: My house, i.e Slytherin, has welcomed me in the grandest way possible! First Morgan, aka Ashftslipknot14, then Annelise Wolfe also talked to me! Who am I missing...oh yes! Cyane Blackthorn aka Jenna also has been ever so helpful! The activities that go on in the house itself are so amazing! The S.C.a.R activities are so fun! I also love my dormitory(although I haven't done anything in that yet)! So far, love my house!

Kit: My house identity has changed a bit since I started reading Harry Potter at age 7. Initially, I sort of fell into the trap of stereotypes based on how the houses are portrayed in the book series. I didn't consider myself brave, I wasn't a "side dish or the rest" and I certainly wasn't "evil" so I told anyone who asked that I was a Ravenclaw. I did feel like a Hufflepuff sometimes, but unfortunately, others didn't always respond so well to that, so I remained a Ravenclaw to protect my pride. I was in the Merlin/Gifted program and my parents and teachers were always telling me I was smart, so I figured that house fit me best. However, I had some life-changing experiences when my friends ditched me in third grade. I was teased and taunted on the playground. I was friendless, and thank goodness I was due to start at a new school the following year. I realized that I would rather have average grades and be surrounded by a group of loyal friends than attain all the knowledge in the world yet not have any at all. Therefore, in 5th grade, I started telling people I was in Hufflepuff. After I got old enough to make my own Pottermore account, I took the test and was sorted into Hufflepuff on three separate occasions (Ravenclaw and Slytherin once) and even though I've been called weak, worthless, and so on for being a Hufflepuff I'm never going to change it now! My Hufflepuff friends on here were so welcoming on the first day, I immediately felt at home.

Sarah: Yes, I got sorted into Gryffindor! I am so happy with my house, and I enjoy being a part of this little family. I definitely feel right at home in my house.

Arya: That is perfect, and in fact, portrays the true meaning of being perfect. With being blessed by a wonderful Head of House who can be wished by a lot, but can only be received by a few, and with a shining galaxy of starts retaining around, it's the best I can expect from a house. Exploring that wonderful opportunity, I am settling to make my house wearing the robes of glory while making an excellent representation of what it means to be an eagle myself.

Lucy: I’m glad to hear that being a Slytherin is still as good as I remember and that the rest of you are enjoying your time in your houses. Now, what’s your favourite subject?

Katherine: Oh difficult question, but I think I enjoyed Herbology the most this Term! I love plants and nature and wildlife in real life! And having magical plants on mH is the icing on the cake! I have already handed in 1 assignment for it!

Kit: I enjoy all my classes, but my absolute favourite is Charms. You can do so much with this branch of magic, and it is practically the reason for the survival of the Wizarding World! My personal favourite spell has always been the Levitation Charm, otherwise called Wingardium Leviosa. Let's hope I can do some Charms practicals soon! (Spoiler: for any new students reading this, please sign up for charms. There are absolutely no materials needed for the first year, except for passion and creativity. The professors of all the classes are amazing, so these will not be like your typical school lessons- in fact, the exact opposite!)

Sarah: Oof, such a hard question! I adore many classes at Hogwarts! There is definitely a tie between Defense Against the Dark Arts and Care of Magical Creatures as my favourite. I'm really interested in the Magizoologist and Dragonology field, which most likely stems from my love of CoMC.

Arya: Just as how easily is a piece of gold being distinguished from a bucket of silver, it's my greatest pleasure to credit the art of Transfiguration with being recognized as my favourite subject. I am a fan of science and philosophy, so that is only in a matter of seconds does my heart gets attracted to it.

Lucy: Good choices everyone! Have you all made some friends during your time at Hogwarts so far?

Katherine: Yes I have! Morgan, Alyssa, Sarah, Jenna, Anne, Mist and Maddy are some of them!! I love making new friends and am quite good at it! I am also so thankful to them as they have helped me understand how things on mH work! But it's not just that, they are so fun and exciting! I love talking to each one of them!

Kit: I've made an effort to talk to a lot of people here, so I'd go as far as to say that if you are reading this right now, I would consider you a friend. Virtual hugs and thanks to all who have made my Hogwarts experience so special!

Sarah: I have made lots of friends here at MyH! Being a part of the Quidditch team, The Quibbler, and being active on the site has allowed me to meet a lot of really cool people. I've even made some of my closest friends here on MyH.

Arya: Being blessed with a wonderful community here at mH, it's a pleasure to have friends all around me. There were so many people I met, who helped me to find my way through the site and whom I even wanted to be friends with! It is worth mentioning the names of Linda, Aeri, Alyssa and Reiluna who were some of my first friends here at mH who also helped me to find my way around the site.

Lucy: I’m so happy to hear that! Finally, what is your favourite part of MyH?

Katherine: I think my favourite part would be researching! Basically, for mH homework or any activities or Quidditch, you have to go on Google and search for answers that you might need. This helps me learn more about the HP world!! I love researching in real life too so this is also fun and intriguing!!!

Kit: There's a lot to love about this site, but the community has been my biggest support until now. Everyone is so welcoming here, it feels like I am talking with someone face-to-face. From the Discord Help Desk to the countless PMs I've sent people, time and time again I've got all the help I've needed. The games and activities give me a nice place to escape from life's stressful situations. So if you are reading this, you are my favourite part of mH! Thank you all 😃.

Sarah: My favourite parts about MyH are playing Quidditch and taking the classes. The Practicals for the classes are super fun and creative. I'm also a huge fan of the Trivia Section in the Library, where I spend a lot of my time.

Arya: Everything. I hope that explained everything I wanted to say!

Lucy: Well, I’m glad you’re all enjoying yourselves! Thank you again for agreeing to do this! Enjoy the rest of your year! It’s so refreshing to talk to the youth of today! 😋 Well, I hope you’ve all enjoyed this opportunity to get to know some of our newest students in this edition of the Quibbler!
