Not-So-Magical Cooking: Chocolate Chip Scones

with Aeri Song

This recipe is one that I haven’t made since high school, but I was so happy that it turned out well! As I mentioned in previous issues, if you have any allergies but would love to try a recipe of mine, please don’t hesitate to message me! Now let’s get to baking!

scones.jpg

Yield: Serves 12
Time: 30 Minutes

Ingredients
1 ¾ Cups All-Purpose Flour
⅓ Cup Sugar
2 Teaspoons Baking Powder
½ Teaspoon Salt
5 Tablespoons Unsalted Butter, Chilled
½ Cup Semisweet Chocolate Chips
3 Tablespoons Orange Juice

Preparation
Step 1: Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) and then spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray.
Step 2: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. With a pastry blender or a fork, cut in the butter until the mixture looks like crumbs and then stir in the chocolate chips. After that, mix in the orange juice to form a dough.
Step 3: Put the dough on a floured surface and then knead or roll it into a 9 in (22 cm) circle about ½ in (1 cm) thick. With a 2 ½ in (6 cm) fluted biscuit cutter, or a cup around the same size with flour on the edge, cut out 12 scones and push the dough scraps together for the last few, if necessary. Then transfer the scones onto the baking sheet.
Step 4: Bake in preheated oven until golden brown for about 12 minutes and then move to wire racks to cool. Then you have Chocolate Chip Scones with a slight orange tang!

Have fun! :) There are three portions of the Hangman game; each portion is a different mH member. Feel free to look in the Gringotts Coaster to help you out - the members in this game are only alumni or active students. Once complete, please PM awesome_forever the congratulations page.

Random seems to be the theme of this edition’s installment. Over the past few weeks I have spent much time mulling over my responses to your seemingly random questions; however, are they truly random? I should think not. From what I can gather in your rambling questions… this group of individuals who spend their time on our lovely site, have the most playful and silly hearts imaginable. Not only do they spend time thinking up silly questions, but they genuinely are children at heart… and for that, I think we’re all grateful.

We should continue nurturing these childish fantasies. One never knows when they’ll come in handy in real life! Alas… on to the questions and my not-so-serious answers.

How to react to food cravings? – Asphodel
Simple. Eat what you’re craving. Clearly your body wants the food, so why will you be ever so cruel to deny it?

How does a person master the arts of hugsquishing? -Mellsuili
I’m seriously impressed that something created by my brainsickles is still the hot topic of today. I’m pretty sure I was the first person to ever squish someone to death with my first target being my sister, Ella. But I digress… Hugsquishing started as a surprise attack on the unknowing person and so… you should surprise them. Make sure when completing your hugsquish, you grab on and hold tight. Even if the person is fighting against your love, you can still latch on and go along for the ride as they attempt to buck you off. And… well, if they’re successful, just surprise them again. Eventually… after many surprises, they’ll wear down and like your hugs.

How do I remember all the conjugated endings for verbs in Spanish, o wise one? - Eowyn29

Oh gosh, that is a tough one. I say… use whatever feels right to you at the time. Hopefully whoever you are speaking or writing to can suss out from context what you mean. And if not, well, you’ll have a fun conversation about having attended a party in the future that hasn’t happened.

How to ensure ultimate pie throwing contest? - xsarahsan

I’m going to pull my old lady hat out for this one… Back in MY day, we simply acquired pies and threw them at unwilling victims with the eventual success of getting a huge food fight going on. Nowadays, though, well, one could try it on Discord in the Castle Chat and see how it goes. ;)

So as you can see, dear Reader, the questions of laughter and fun are plenty around here. I’m sure that each of you has a secret burning, urging question and are dying for your perfect response from me. If so, please head over to The Quibbler newsroom in Hogsmeade and post your question in the Advice topic. If you’re too shy to share openly, well, you can always send your question to me and I can respond anonymously.

DID YOU KNOW?

An Ordinary Room in the Dungeons

by Mellsuili

I realize when I say an ordinary room, people might get suspicious. Let me assure you that nothing will happen there. Inside is a fireplace, some furniture, and a possibility of mass destruction. Forget that I mentioned mass destruction; let's get on with this duel. Give a cheer to Rose Jean and Dragon!

Wands in play:
Dragon: 8 1/2-inch Rowan with Ashwinder Ash
Rose Jean: 11 1/4-inch Hawthorn with Chimaera Scale

Dragon and Rose Jean, who will be facing off with each other, follow their referee, Disa, someplace in the dungeons. After a few minutes they arrive at a pair of doors. The pair’s referee opens the door, revealing a spacious room inside. An ominous looking rug has been sprawled out over the floor and there is a big window in the left wall. In the middle is a fireplace and sound of it crackling makes all three feel like they're celebrating a New Year.

Disa beckons them to come inside and stand in position. They listen and try to avoid bumping into the furniture as they do. Once they reached their designated points, the duel begins.

"First to cast goes first!" Calls Disa, closing the doors behind them. Before spells and chaos emerge, Rose and Dragon show some manners and bow down towards each other and their referee. As they begin to stand up, an unexpected snake fires itself at Dragon. And the terrible thing about this snake is that it's made of fire! They didn't have enough time to jump out of the way, so it's lucky the spell wasn't too harmful. The bad news is that the snake wrapped itself around Dragon's leg and, once it dissolved, it left Dragon doing a dance which looked like a cartoon character that needed to pee. While this happened, Disa states "Rose Jean starts the duel off strong summoning up her inner Slytherin!".

At least Dragon's hands weren't damaged, as they tried to break a bone or two. They waited for their 'pee-pee dance', as Disa calls it, to calm down and then shouted “Conqueo”. The spell rushed at somebody, not Rose Jean, and the light dashed into a picture frame and shattered into pieces. That's one safety hazard that the duellers will have to look out for.

Rose Jean doesn't seem to mind the shattered glass at all though, as she’s not done playing with fire! (Quick note here, it's not suggested that you play with fire in real life.) "Teringis Scindo!" she shouts, and a whip with blazing fire appears before Dragon. Rose's wand acts as a handle as she turns the whip back and forth to gain momentum. And with a strike of her arm, the line of fire comes down on her opponent's torso. A deep burn appears on Dragon's chest as Rose decides to come down once again, leaving another injury.

"Aquilo!" Dragon now has enough of their rival playing with fire. Their wand, as how Disa described it, begins to function like a hairdryer, at least in the way it shoots air. Instead of blowing warm air, it blows cold air, though the wind isn't too cold for someone to turn blue. At the most, after that attack, it leaves Rose's teeth chattering. Rose doesn't appreciate the cool breeze and would prefer a warmer approach. With the incantation “Sol Erumpo”, a second sun grows in this room. The sun, however, stops growing, possibly due to Rose's chattering teeth, and sprout some dandelions, making the room feel more alive with its yellow hue.

It made Dragon upset that they could destroy the dandelions due to their curses and charms. They have to continue though; winning this duel is on their mind! "Glacio Impluo!" They yell, causing sharp shards of ice to rain down on Rose. Once the rain clears up, it reveals some nasty cuts on her shoulder and arms, as they used them to cover her head from the attack. Rose quotes, "I'm sure the burns have thinned your skin a bit, but not enough..." before she casts her spell. As one might've guessed, something horrid would happen to Dragon. A light blazes toward her opponent, and as it hits, patches of skin fall off. It's not pretty, and once you have seen what it looked like, you can't get it out of your head.

This duel has become a fire versus ice battle. Rose plays with fire while Dragon plays with ice. "Algeo Trisitita!" shouts Dragon, as a light heads for their competitor's direction. Soon, their opponent feels a small tingly feeling of coldness. Next, in a second, it feels like Rose is trapped in an ice cube. From this description, someone might guess that Rose stood in a winter storm. But nope! She’s warm physically, on the inside, however, it's another story.

As Rose feels like she needs a blanket and a couple of cookies to warm her up, Dragon sees this as an opportunity to attack! With a flick of their wand, buttons start raining down! Actually, I lied. Only one button comes down, and it sits in the corner near the shattered picture frame, all alone.

Now Rose feels her insides beginning to warm up, and now her focus shifts towards Dragon. "Aeris Percutio!" screams Rose, as her spell hurls towards her foe. And, it's not something nice to think about what happened. Dragon already has sensitive skin and burns to worry about but giving them small cuts on their whole body! Ouch, I'm glad I'm not in this duel.

This duel is going to give me shivers the longer I think about what I said in the last paragraph. That aside, Dragon doesn't want to 'joke around' anymore, and yells "Congelationis!" With her sickly freezing insides, Rose's physical body now gets a piece of the coldness. Two frostbites begin to form on Rose's right foot and right hand, and as Disa quotes it "a cruel shade of blue." After that attack, Rose shouts "Sectumsempra!" And her attack hits an object. It isn't Dragon, it's an innocent couch. (How could you Rose?!) A gap rips open on the couch, revealing light beige fluff. As these events go on, Disa quotes "Waittt... Dragon's blood...  She's not trying to exploit her blood for cleaning ovens, is she?" To me, it sounds like she is!

Now, this duel is more like ‘blood versus ice’ than ‘fire versus ice’. Still, that sounds like an exciting battle to watch, though the blood will most likely drip down on ice. Enough of my rambling, Dragon tries to trap Rose in a never-ending cycle of winter! They attempt Fringuis Sanguis again, but it dodges Rose by an inch or two. And more blood is incoming! This duel is not for the squeamish! Rose tries Sectumsempra again, and with luck, it works! A 5-inch cut appears on Dragon's abdomen. At least Rose got her oven-cleaner!

If you think the third time is the charm, you're wrong! Well, that’s wrong in this duel. Dragon tries Fringuis Sanguis, and it hits Rose. Soon, their opponent's insides begin cooling at a quick pace. One would be worried about Rose, as she'll fall into hypothermia any minute now.

Guess what can be creepy or cute at the same time? Bats! Now that I think about it, more answers come along. Like cats, they're usually cute, but they can stare into your soul at any given time. Anyway, Rose attempts the spell Nosferoctum, which summons bats. And now that Dragon is bleeding from that 5-inch cut, those bats might want some of that blood. Bats soon come flying up to Dragon, and they all try and slurp up the red liquid. All of Dragon's cuts become deeper as the bats yearn for more blood. They fight away the bats, pushing and turning, but the bats don't fly away. It's a grizzly sight to see, and I'm glad I wasn't there. Now, Rose is in a state of being almost in hypothermia while Dragon is losing amounts of blood. Disa will have to end the duel soon.

I think I have a theory where Rose is a vampire, but I'm not sure that's true. Though at this moment, she tries to collect some of Dragon's blood. It misses and instead hits the fireplace, which might have caused an explosion if it went into the fire. Instead, it landed on a brick, where it caused a miniature explosion.

And right after the attack on the fireplace, Disa calls the duel to the end. She apparates both duellers to the Hospital Wing, where they can get their injuries checked.
